I've tested dozens of MagSafe wallets, but this is the most premium one yet

ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • Ohsnap’s new Snap Grip Wallet combines style and function, and is available now for $80.
  • It comes in five colors, can store up to eight cards, and doubles as a phone stand.
  • If the price turns you off, you’re better off with a more affordable MagSafe cardholder.

One of the best parts of working in tech is getting to test out the most popular tech items each year. From MagSafe batteries, MagSafe wallets, and other MagSafe accessories, let’s just say it’s not my first rodeo when it comes to testing the most inventive and practical tech accessories on the market.

I’ve tried plenty of different styles, from tons of different brands, and made of lots of different materials. That’s why when there’s one that really catches my eye, I’m usually writing about it. Hence why I’m sharing the Ohsnap Grip Wallet with you today.

MagSafe wallets are perfect for storing cards (and sometimes cash) right on the back of your phone. They’re the ultimate mobile accessory: securely attaching the cards you need to the thing you never leave home without.

Ohsnap’s wallet is made of aluminum, and comes in an expandable, nearly enclosed design. This means that unlike many MagSafe wallets you can slide cards in and out of, it has a more refined approach.

In fact, it’s very similar to expandable wallets like The Ridge, meaning the only way to access your cards is through a slot in the top. This style is one of the most secure ways to carry your cards, but isn’t ideal for carrying cash or other small incidentals.

Ohsnap Grip Wallet tech specs:

  • Holds up to 8 lettered cards, 5 unlettered cards, or between 6-7 of an assortment
  • Made of aluminum
  • MagSafe compatible
  • Built-in stand and grip
  • 360-degree rotating ring
  • RFID to protect cards
  • Available in five colors: Obsidian Black, Carbon Fiber, Cranberry Smash, Crocodile Green, and Crushed Orchid

I was able to hold my driver’s license, two “lettered” bank cards (meaning they have some form of raised text, and in my case, card covers), my pharmacy card, and my insurance card inside the Ohsnap, with a bit more space leftover. Overall, the wallet is sleek on the back of my iPhone 14 Pro, has no overhang, and is lightweight. You could also snap it off your phone and use it on its own.

To remove your cards, you need to take the Ohsnap off your device, slide your cards out using the notch on the back of the wallet, and then fan and select your cards. This for me, was slightly challenging. My debit and credit cards sort of stuck together, while my thinner cards came loose much easier. While I was able to retrieve my cards, it is certainly not my preferred wallet design (I get anxiety while paying at a register with a line behind me).

That being said, I can’t knock this wallet’s seamless design, secure hold, and appealing look. It makes my phone look elevated and premium, especially when coupled with the Latercase I’m currently testing. The built-in phone stand and 360-degree rotatable grip are also a nice touches.

You can also secure your phone on a MagSafe stand without taking the Ohsnap wallet off, thanks to outside magnetization, making it a great option as a daily driver for a prospective MagSafe wallet user.

The Ohsnap is also useable as a phone stand (and a grip, too).

My biggest critique with this design is that you have to remove the wallet from your phone to access your cards, which, in my experience, can sometimes be cumbersome depending on where you are (I wouldn’t want to be messing with it while in the queue at a busy bar, for example).

You also can’t squeeze in cash or smaller paper incidentals like I can with other wallets I’ve tested, and I am disappointed with the color selections. There are no real neutrals beyond black, and I’d like to see a few more punchy colors like pink, red, or chrome options (a desert titanium option to match the iPhone 16 would be stunning).

Also: The best MagSafe wallet I’ve tested is not made by Apple or Anker

As a Gen-Z, I’m very adamant about appreciating how my tech looks, specifically for items like MagSafe accessories that are on my phone 24/7 — and especially when the cost is nearing the $100 mark. But price aside, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a more secure, enclosed wallet style, and an all-in-one type MagSafe accessory

ZDNET’s buying advice

If you want a premium MagSafe wallet with multifunctional features, the Ohsnap Snap Grip Wallet nails it. It has a sleek profile, great card storage, and added features like a grip and stand combo. Although pricier, it’s a great investment for someone looking to use their MagSafe accessory frequently.

If you’re looking for smaller capacities, more minimalist designs, or something more affordable, there are plenty of other options on the market. If you’re looking for a “special occasions” MagSafe wallet accessory, check out some of our other ZDNET-tested picks
